The city of Placetas is located centrally in Cuba, in the Villa Clara Province. It is one of the 13 municipalities of the region, in which the geographical centre of Cuba, Guaracabuya, is situated. It was initially declared as a town in 1881, but was stated as a Cuban city in 1925. Placetas is a rich agricultural region that was founded due to its abundant sugar production in 1861. It is now a big manufacturer of tobacco and is thus an economically prosperous hinterland. The city looks beautiful with laurel trees planted all over, giving it the name ‘La Villa de los Laureles’.
